Why is vitamin c body lotion important in skin care?

The need for vitamin C in skin care is extensive. The benefits of vitamin C in skin care including boosting immunity, and preventing cancer are endless. According to the National Library Of Medicine of the USA “Vitamin C increases the effectiveness of various functions and stimulates collagen synthesis.” According to Wikipedia, “Vitamin C is a highly effective nutrient for repairing damaged tissue.” The different means of taking these benefits of vitamin C include supplements, face wash, body lotion, etc. Each of these is important in our skincare. In this article, I will discuss how important vitamin c body lotion is in skin care.

Important Of Vitamin C body Lotion/ Topical Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C like face cleansers, body lotions, serums, etc. are all science-based. According to Harvard Medical School “Topical vitamin C ingredients help slow skin aging.” They can protect your skin from sun damage. Vitamin C as topical like body lotion is full of antioxidants.

Increases and maintains collagen level

Collagen makes our skin firm, smooth, plump, and youthful. However, age slows down the collagen production of our body and makes our skin sagging. Vitamin C body lotion helps to restore the collagen and elastin of our body. In addition, it maintains the existing collagen and prevents it from being damaged.

The topical use of vitamin C tightens the skin. Besides, it prevents the skin from premature aging and provides a younger-looking appearance.

Ensures an even skin

Speaking of collagen, it is also responsible for making our skin even. Decreasing collagen causes wrinkles, and fine lines, and makes our skin uneven. Since topical vitamin C products enhance collagen production, they prevent wrinkles. And these products must be used for 12 weeks straight to have wrinkle-free skin.

Eliminates spots

Overexposure to the UV rays, environmental stresses, and increased melanin production result in hyperpigmentation. This condition creates darker spots or patches on our skin.

Vitamin C has antioxidant properties that can lighten unwanted dark spots. Also, vitamin C restrains the production of a melanin-inducing enzyme, named tyrosinase.

Regular application of vitamin C lotions or creams can help keep melanin in check. When the melanin level is controlled, it will prevent hyperpigmentation.

Reduces irritation

Our skin experiences blotching, redness, rash, and irritations due to many reasons. Among these reasons, toxins can cause the most serious skin conditions.

Toxicity in our body increases oxidative stress and contributes to inflammation. And inflammation causes several skin issues like acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, vitiligo, etc.

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin C cure inflammatory skin diseases. Also, vitamin C fights against free radicals and repairs damaged capillaries.

Blocks sun damage

UV rays of the sun cause redness, dryness, roughness, and tanning on the skin. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C not only reduce cell damage but also protect our skin from UV rays.

Vitamin C body lotions lessen sun damage for sure. But body lotions with a combination of vitamin C and E block sun damage more effectively.

Heals wounds and scars

Wounds are painful if not healed timely. Vitamin C can solve this problem. It contains ascorbic acid that helps to activate collagen production.

An increased collagen level ensures a rapid recovery from bed sores and burns. Vitamin C skin care products resolve this kind of injury better than vitamin C-rich drugs, supplements, or foods.

Again, vitamin C applied to the skin for 6 months can diminish surgical scars.

Ensures hydration

When the top layer of our skin lacks moisture, it makes the skin itchy and scaly. Also, the skin becomes so dry that the inner oil breaks out. Such conditions lead our skin to premature aging.

Thanks to vitamin C skin care products, ensure proper hydration of the skin. The ascorbic retains water in the epidermis (top layer of the skin) and makes the skin plump and smooth.

This is why dermatologists recommend vitamin C skin care products to patients with dry and oily skin.

How to use vitamin C body lotion

The best time to use vitamin C body lotion is after bath, when the skin is slightly damp. In this way, the lotion gets absorbed into the skin better than dry skin.

If your skin is too dry, you will have to apply vitamin C lotion two to three times. Here are the steps of applying vitamin C body lotion in the right way.

  • Step 1 – Pat-dry your skin after bath so that it doesn’t become completely dry.
  • Step 2 – Take a generous amount of vitamin C body lotion. Rub it in your palms together.
  • Step 3 – Apply the lotion thoroughly on your body. Start massaging from the legs, then go towards the upper body. Reapply the lotion if needed, for extra dry areas.

You can use vitamin C body lotion daily. However, for safety purposes, you need to check if the lotion is okay for everyday application.

Therefore, make sure to read the ingredients and instructions of the lotion you have bought before use.

Who should not use vitamin C body lotion

For children, any vitamin C skin care product is a big NO. Only adults can use vitamin C creams, lotions, and serums. However, not every adult’s skin is suitable to use vitamin C.

People with sensitive skin should stay away from vitamin C products. Moreover, if someone is allergic to any of the ingredients, he/she should avoid those products too.

Vitamin C on sensitive or allergic skin will cause a yellowish discoloration. Sometimes, topical vitamin C products can cause itching, dryness, redness, stinging, etc.

Though vitamin C helps in oil control, it may not work on heavily acne-prone or oily skin. Therefore, if your skin is in a particular condition, you should be careful before using vitamin C lotion.

Do a patch test to see if any allergic reaction appears. Alternatively, you can start applying a little amount of lotion and observe how your skin reacts. Do this for a few days.

If you face any allergic reaction, stop using the lotion immediately and consult your dermatologist. For excessively oily or acne-prone skin, use a lotion or cream that controls oils and prevents breakouts.
